TORONTO, June 3, 2020 – The CIO Strategy Council is pleased to announce the approval of a new National Standard of Canada that specifies minimum requirements on the design and performance of data protection solutions.
The National Standard of Canada, CAN/CIOSC 100-1:2020, Data governance – Part 1: Data protection of digital assets, covers fundamental characteristics and attributes required of data protection solutions that safeguard data at-rest, in-use and in-motion across platforms and IT systems within and between organizations. It was prepared by the CIO Strategy Council technical committee on data governance, comprised of over 100 thought leaders and experts in data management, privacy and related subjects from coast-to-coast-to-coast.
“There are compelling reasons for organizations to share data, from improving operational efficiencies and reducing business costs to generating new insights and making better business decisions,” said Keith Jansa, Executive Director of the CIO Strategy Council. “Growing data breaches, however, from inadvertent data misuse and unauthorized access, are becoming increasingly pervasive issues for governments and businesses alike – all amplified by the current COVID-19 circumstances. The National Standard of Canada provides essential requirements to safeguard sensitive data assets.”
“As the COVID-19 pandemic is causing enormous social disruption, economic hardship and tragic loss of life, this is the time to step up and demonstrate inspirational leadership. Each one of us must play our part and stand up fearlessly against cybercriminals and do what is needed to protect all that is sacred to our work and our country. The new standard emphasizes the need for a data-centric security approach at a time when sensitive data and information needs to be protected from falling into the hands of unauthorized parties”, said Nandini Jolly, President and CEO, CryptoMill Cybersecurity Solutions.
This National Standard of Canada is available at no cost, in both of Canada’s official languages, and can be viewed here.
